Compositional Analyses

Complete compositional analysis services for upstream exploration and production utilizing industry-standard methods.

Complete compositional analysis services for upstream exploration and production utilizing industry-standard methods.

At SGS, we follow rigorous calibration procedures to generate detailed compositional data on both atmospheric and pressurized samples. We offer an extensive network of state-of-the-art laboratories and high-quality analyses.

Our compositional analysis services

Our services include a proprietary on-site flash system called Mini-GOR™ and an integrated flash and composition measurement system called GC-GOR™. Both were developed by SGS for analysis of pressurized oil, gas and brine samples. These systems accurately determine GOR (Gas-Oil Ratios), GWR (Gas-Water Ratios) and CGR (Condensate-Gas Ratios) along with oil, water and condensate shrinkage factors.

The composition of flashed hydrocarbon products are measured with conventional gas chromatography (GC) in accordance with GPA standard methods. Brine (also referred to as produced water) ionic concentrations are determined by ion-chromatography (IC). Bulk properties, such as water pH, total dissolved solid (TDS), water-in-oil, molecular weight and density are measured to ASTM or other industry-standard methods.

Through our compositional analysis services, we provide:

  • Innovative Mini-GOR™ technology for onsite GOR, GWR and CGR analyses
  • Patented GC-GORtechnology for an integrated laboratory based analyses
  • Extended compositions of oil to C36+ by capillary GC, GPA method
  • Extended compositions of gas to the last detectable component, GPA method
  • Water compositions by titrations and ion chromatography (IC)
  • Bulk sample properties by industry-standard methods

Why choose SGS?

Our service delivers high resolution, high quality compositional data that gives you a detailed breakdown of components in the crude oil or gas that will be required by engineers and chemists throughout the life cycle of your well.

This data is essential for establishing the value of your hydrocarbon reserves, predicting future performance of your wells, designing transport and process systems, and establishing the market value of your oil and gas production.
