In this edition, we will reveal the winner of the 2014 Ontario Forage Master competition and discuss corn silage results for the 2014 season as well as our greenhouse testing services.


SGS was a proud sponsor and held a judging role in the annual Forage Master competition, held in Ontario. Congratulations to all of the first place winners in each of the 24 counties represented.

With over 200 entries in this year's competition, it was a difficult decision for the judging panel. Emerging victorious was Simon Signer of Wellington County, who was awarded the Ontario Forage Master title for 2014.

After a challenging growing season, which included a late spring with wet planting conditions, delayed maturity, and a later harvest than typical, corn silage quality may be more variable than expected.  

We have prepared a table of average values from this year’s fresh corn silage samples, click here to view them.

However, it is important to test your own silage to determine the value of its nutritional constituents. Please contact us with any questions you may on your testing needs.


SGS offers a full range of analytical services to greenhouse growers, each of which is a valuable tool in producing a top quality crop. Suggested sampling frequencies for each are outlined below:

  • Source Water - Test before each production season, especially water sourced from ponds and wells which may have varying mineral content from year to year.
  • Nutrient Solution - Weekly to monthly testing allows monitoring of nutrient levels, pH and EC.
  • Growing Media - Test once before planting and once again mid-season to determine the nutrient content, pH, EC of the media, and determine whether leaching is required.
  • Plant Tissue - Weekly or monthly analysis allows monitoring of the adequacy of fertilizer programs and trending of nutrient concentrations. Monitoring often provides initial awareness of deficiencies before visual symptoms appear.
  • DNA Multiscan - The Small Scan Monitoring Package detects levels of up to 30 common pathogen species, such as: pythium,phytopthora and rhizoctonia, allowing control before the diseases become symptomatic. A diagnostic Large Scan of up to 70 pathogenic species, if most often performed when the cause of a certain symptomology requires identification. DNA Multiscan can be performed on plant leaves, stems, roots, in media and water.
